openravepy is not set into PYTHONPATH env variable

Pi Robot
Hello,

I just tried installing the latest_stable OpenRave from source on Ubuntu 14.04.  The build and install appeared to go OK but when I run the hanoi example I get the following error:

$ openrave.py -example hanoi
openravepy is not set into PYTHONPATH env variable, attempting to add
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

So I ran the command:

$ export PYTHONPATH=$PYTHONPATH:`openrave-config --python-dir`

The I verified my PYTHONPATH:

$ env | grep PYTHONPATH
PYTHONPATH=/home/patrick/catkin_ws/devel/lib/python2.7/dist-packages:/opt/ros/indigo/lib/python2.7/dist-packages:/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages

And I checked the contents of the python2.7 directory:
$ ls -l /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages
total 96
drwxr-sr-x  4 root staff  4096 Dec 27  2013 catkinize-0.1-py2.7.egg

-rw-r--r--  1 root staff  1601 Apr 16 06:41 openravepy.egg-info

Finally, here are the contents of the openravepy subdirectory:

$ ls -l /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/openravepy
total 8

drwxr-sr-x 5 root staff 4096 Apr 17 05:41 _openravepy_0_9

So why I am getting this error?

Thanks!

patrick,

there should be an openrave.bash file in `openrave-config --share-dir`, sourcing this bash file should add openrave to all essential paths.

hope this helps,

Re: openravepy is not set into PYTHONPATH env variable

Pi Robot
Thank you Rosen.  Unfortunately, that did not fix the problem.  I still get the same error:

$ source `openrave-config --share-dir`/openrave.bash
$ openrave.py -example hanoi

openravepy is not set into PYTHONPATH env variable, attempting to add
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I should have mentioned that I am using the latest_stable branch as instructed here.  Should I be using a different branch?

Also, it seems that the Debian binaries are not yet available for Ubuntu 14.04, is that correct?

Thanks,
--patrick

hi patrick,

latest_stable hasn't been updated for 3 years, (therefore stable ;0) ). i recommend using the master branch since it's almost release ready (with a million fixes and feature additions).

as four the python path problem, after you source can you echo your PYTHONPATH? internally openrave.bash should be doing:

export PYTHONPATH=`openrave-config --python-dir`:$PYTHONPATH

maybe source doesn't work the same way on ubuntu 14?

Re: openravepy is not set into PYTHONPATH env variable

Pi Robot
Thanks Rosen--using the master branch did the trick.  Also, it seems I have to use the command 'openrave0.9-config' rather than 'openrave-config' without the version number.  But otherwise, things seems to be working now.

Thanks again!

Re: openravepy is not set into PYTHONPATH env variable

yijiangh
I have the same problem on latest-stable branch on Ubuntu 14.04.

Keeping up to the master branch worked pretty well!

Just to add up, if someone is running on a virtual machine or computer with small free memory, you might like the make error like below:

The main error here is:
C++: internal compiler error: killed (program cc1plus).

Referring to internal compiler error

Basically you are running out of memory to complete the build job.

So either enlarge your RAM memory (like in my case, I increase RAM from 1GB to 4GB for my virtual machine on VmWare) or like micbou pointed our in his post above,

micbou wrote
Since you are on a machine with only one core (from the -j 1 option of the make command), you should try to increase the swap size. This tutorial seems good enough.
Happy building!

Best,
Yijiang
